Police in RAK Marg recorded a cyber cheating case after a 26-year-old man from Wadala lost more than 3 lakh while searching for a part-time job online. The fraudsters lured the victim into a trap by sending him a message offering a job and then made him pay various charges in the amount of 3.04 lakh, police said.
According to the police, the complaint of a video editor by profession has been working from home since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. Recently, he received a text message from an unknown number offering him a part-time job with a commercial portal of foreground with a salary of 8,000. per month one WhatsApp number was provided in the contact message.
When contacted, someone by the name of Marasya started chatting with him. The person explained how to work with the shopping portal and sent them a link for the recording where the victim filled in their credentials, including bank account number, IFC code, email id, etc. The page was identical to that of the shopping portal, the police said.
Initially he was asked to pay 200 for the registration, but it did not stop there and the fraudsters continued to demand money in the name of different charges, he also ensured a bonus in the salary s ‘he was paying the money, the victim said in her complaint. Over the next two days, the victim ended up paying a total of 3.04 lakh, but the scammers continued to demand. The complaint became suspicious and consulted his family who told him it was a fraud.
“We have recorded an offense of identity theft and cheating as well as sections 66D (identity theft) and 66D (deception by identity theft using computer resources) of the Internet Technology Act. information (IT) and an investigation is underway, “said a police officer.
