Community Raises Over $ 10,000 After Video Shows NYPD Sanitation Workers Throw Fresh Fruit

A viral video of city workers throwing out fresh fruit and vegetables sparked outrage over the weekend, prompting the local community to rally.

A viral video taken on Thursday, September 23, shows NYPD agents and Department of Sanitation workers tossing thousands of dollars in food.

A worker at the booth tells News 12 he remains angry that this has happened. He says they are just trying to provide for their families.

Residents of the Allerton community gathered on Tuesday to support Diana’s booth at Pelham Parkway South and White Plains Road.

They say they are shocked that this could happen during a pandemic and want to show their support as much as possible.

A city agency told News 12 that the video only shows one side of the story – the booth never showed a license and then left the cart unattended.

Bronx resident Jeremiah Cedeno says seeing the viral video prompted him to organize a GoFundMe page to reimburse Diana, which he calls a staple in their community.

In just three days, the page raised over $ 10,000.

“There are a lot of working-class neighborhoods. There are a lot of areas, especially in my borough in the Bronx, that have difficulty accessing food. And for food to be thrown in such a careless way and tossed in the trash, for things to be thrown on the floor, it was just hard to watch. It was hard to see, ”Cedeno said.

Cedeno says the page’s goal is to raise $ 15,000. He says that as a community organizer, his vision is for the city to formalize the street vendor industry so this never happens again.
