The Awami League issued a show cause notice on Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Zahangir Alam regarding his controversial comments on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the number of martyred freedom fighters.

The notice, signed by Awami League Secretary General Obaidul Quader, was released yesterday, Gazipur City LA chairman Md Azmat Ullah Khan confirmed.

Mohammad Zahangir Alam, also secretary general of the Gazipur Awami League metropolitan unit, was invited by the party to provide his explanations within 15 days.

Meanwhile, Zahangir’s comments sparked a war of words between the central leaders of the ruling party – Obaidul Quader among them – at the office of AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhanmondi on Saturday evening, said yesterday. party insiders at the Daily Star.

The mayor of Gazipur said he would respond to the justification notice in time and accept the decision of the party chairman.

Zahangir called the allegations a plot against him ahead of Gazipur’s municipal elections, saying his political opponents and some conspirators were propagating against him.

Recently, Zahangir on a broadcast commented on Bangabandhu and questioned the actual number of martyred freedom fighters, and the commentary video went viral.

Amid protests from party men, Zahangir called the content of the video “fake and fabricated.”

In a September 22 video statement, he also claimed that his rivals edited the content of the video and posted it on social media to make him, his party and the government appear “questionable.”

Tensions within the party became evident on September 24, when supporters and opponents of the mayor demonstrated by blocking the highway near Board Bazar.

Since then, party supporters of rival groups have staged protests and counter-demonstrations in the city.

PROTESTS AGAINST THE MAYOR OF GAZIPUR

A section of LA men yesterday staged protests and blocked highways for hours demanding the removal of Gazipur mayor Zahangir from his post.

The agitators even demand his expulsion from the post of his party, that of general secretary of the AL municipal unit in Gazipur.

Restless people started demonstrating around 4:00 p.m. in the Station Road areas of Tongi, Cherag Ali, Chandona Intersection and Rajbari Road.

They blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for about two hours to assert their demands.

Earlier yesterday, a section of journalists also formed a human chain around 11:00 am outside the Deputy Commissioner (DC) office in Gazipur to lobby for the same demands.

THE WAR OF LEADERS ‘WORDS

On Saturday, like any other day, several central AL leaders, including Presidium member Matia Chowdhury, Joint Secretary General AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Secretary for Freedom Fighters Affairs Mrinal Kanti Das, Organizing Secretary Afzal Hossain, central member Iqbal Hossain Opu and Awal Shamim were present at AL. President Sheikh Hasina’s office in Dhanmondi.

Party insiders said tensions increased once Obaidul Quader entered office.

The sources said that when Quader entered the room, Iqbal Hossain Opu wanted to know why the LA secretary general was not taking any action against the mayor of Gazipur following his derogatory remarks about Bangabandhu and the fighters of the LA. freedom.

“Quader bhai, you helped Zahangir get elected and now you are not taking any action against him,” said Opu, an LA leader who was present.

In response, Quader asked Opu how he became an MP for Shariatpur-1 in the last election. Then, both angrily and loudly, they questioned the popularity of the other in their respective constituencies.

The other leaders present at the time tried to bring the situation under control and eventually the duo left the party office.

Wishing to remain anonymous, several LA leaders said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had expressed disappointment at the heated controversy in his political office.
